Description

A second state or edition of Hasui's sunset composition at Ichinokura in the Ikegami district of Tokyo, known as the site of Ikegami Honmonji, one of Japan's most important Nichiren Buddhist temples. This variant likely represents a recut or reprinted edition with possible differences in color palette or sky gradation. The Ikegami subjects produced during Hasui's career document the semi-rural character of this southwestern Tokyo district before urban consolidation. A sunset composition would feature the warm reds and oranges of the evening sky reflected in rice paddies or the stone pathways leading toward the temple grounds, with silhouetted pine or cryptomeria trees framing the scene. The pairing of religious architecture with transient natural light was a recurrent strategy in Hasui's work, aligning his landscapes with the mono no aware aesthetic tradition while demonstrating the shin-hanga movement's technical capacity for nuanced atmospheric color.
