Description

Published as part of the series Twenty Views of Tokyo, this print depicts Senso-ji temple in Asakusa after a snowfall, with winter sunlight breaking through to illuminate the white-covered rooftops and grounds. Hasui excels in snow scenes, earning the sobriquet "Artist of Snow" for prints in which fresh snowfall transforms familiar urban and rural spaces. The Kannon-do main hall and surrounding temple buildings would be rendered with their characteristic architectural detail softened under snow, while the sudden brightness of yukibare — snow-clearing sunshine — creates sharp tonal contrasts between shadowed eaves and sunlit open areas. Bokashi gradations in the sky convey the cold, clean air following a winter storm. The print is among Hasui's most celebrated Tokyo subjects, combining his mastery of snow-light with one of the city's most iconic religious sites.
