Description
Among Hasui's several depictions of Taisho Pond at Kamikochi (上高地渓谷), this print offers a view of the pond and the surrounding high mountain valley in Nagano Prefecture. The pond, created in 1915 by a lava flow from Mount Yakedake that blocked the Azusa River, became a standard subject in Hasui's landscape repertoire. The standing dead trees — birch and larch killed when the land flooded — provided him structural elements to organize the middle distance, their vertical lines breaking the horizontal emphasis of both water surface and mountain skyline. Printing variations between editions of the same Kamikochi composition often appear in sky gradation, water tone, and foliage density, making close comparison across prints in the group a useful index of his studio practice and publisher relationships.
