Description
The full title identifies this print precisely: Tamon-ji Temple at Hamahagi in Awa Province, the Boso Peninsula. The romanized Japanese title (Bôshû Hamahagi Tamon-ji) follows the series titling conventions used in several of Hasui's geographically organized sets. This print and the related Tamon Temple entry above likely depict the same site from different distances or angles, or in different seasons—a common practice when a location appeared in multiple series. The Awa Province designation places the temple on the southern Boso coast, a region Hasui visited on sketching trips during the Taisho era. Temple approach paths with stone lanterns framed by cryptomeria trees are a recurring compositional motif in his architectural subjects, providing vertical structure against atmospheric sky treatments using graduated bokashi.
