Description

A second catalogued impression of Hasui's Tennō-ji composition, this print depicts the ancient Osaka temple founded in 593 CE and may represent a reprint edition or a minor revision to the original blocks. The Watanabe Shōzaburō publishing house regularly reissued popular compositions in response to collector demand, and variations between printings can include subtle palette shifts, changes in the intensity of sky gradations, or small adjustments introduced when worn blocks were recut. The temple's historic compound—stone lanterns, weathered wooden gates, ancient trees within the precinct—offered Hasui the layered contrast of geometric architectural forms against organic textures that characterizes his best urban temple scenes. Tonal gradations in the sky and shadow passages are built through successive impressions of thinned pigment on dampened washi.
