Description

From the series Tōkyō jūnidai (Twelve Views of Tokyo), dated 1920, this ōban-format print shows the Terashima neighborhood of what is now Higashi-Mukōjima in Sumida Ward under winter snowfall at dusk. The Twelve Views of Tokyo series, one of Hasui's early major projects for publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, documented Tokyo's urban neighborhoods during specific seasonal moments, establishing the compositional approach Hasui would develop throughout his career. In a snow scene, the bare washi surface functions as the primary representational element: Hasui uses unpigmented paper for accumulated snow and reserves printed tones for shadow hollows in the snow, the dark verticals of bare-branched trees, and the muted gray surfaces of buildings. The phrase yuki ni kureru in the title—snow falling as dusk arrives—implies the fading light of early evening, rendered through warm-gray tonal passages that contrast with the cold white of the snow-covered ground.
