From the Selection of Views of Japan series — a curated group of Hasui's most praised regional subjects. Series membership adds collector appeal beyond that of standalone compositions. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A–D types) represent the most desirable impressions; atmospheric subjects (snow, rain, night) within this series command the highest prices. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Tokaido, Nissaka, from the Selection of Views of the Tokaido published in 1942, depicts the Nissaka post-station in present-day Kakegawa, Shizuoka — a mountain stage of the old Tokaido highway where the road crossed a forested ridge above the Tenryu River valley, associated with the legendary tales of the ghost of Sayo no Nakayama. The forested mountain pass at Nissaka, with its ancient pines and the dramatic drop to the valley below, was one of the Tokaido's most atmospherically charged sections. The 1942 wartime date gives this traditional highway subject a quietly nationalist resonance.
