Tonashi Gate, Matsuyama Castle, from the series "Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition" (Nihon fukei shu II Kansai hen, Matsuyamajo Tonashimon)
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan series — Hasui's most extensive documented series, covering regional landscapes across the entire country. These prints document local sites that often saw little representation in earlier ukiyo-e, giving them documentary as well as artistic value. Snow scenes within this collection (like Saishoin Temple in the Snow, $3,000 at Artelino 2023) command significant premiums. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Tonashi Gate at Matsuyama Castle, from the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition published in February 1935, depicts one of the secondary defensive gates within the Matsuyama Castle complex on Shikoku — the surviving original gate structures that, along with the main keep, make Matsuyama one of Japan's most completely preserved castle compounds. The gate's heavy timber construction, stone base, and defensive placement within the castle's layered defensive circuit would have presented Hasui a subject that emphasizes the castle's military architecture in intimate scale. The February date suggests a winter or late-winter depiction, possibly with bare trees or frost on the stone.
