Description
This print depicts the Tsushima Grand Shrine (Tsushima Jinja) in Tsushima City, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan's most celebrated Shinto shrines dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto and historically associated with protection from plague. The shrine complex sits at the edge of the Shonai River lowlands, and Hasui's composition likely features the shrine's vermilion torii gate rising from or near the water, a subject that invites the use of reflective horizontal passages to double the architectural form below the picture's central axis. Stone lanterns lining the approach and dense cryptomeria canopy framing the principal hall are typical compositional elements for shrine subjects of this type. This print, one of multiple variants Hasui made of the same subject, reflects the shin-hanga practice of revisiting productive compositions across different series contexts, with subtle shifts in palette or time of day distinguishing each version from the others.
