Description
A third variant of Hasui's depiction of Tsushima Grand Shrine at Tsushima City, Aichi Prefecture, this print likely represents a reworking of the composition under different atmospheric or seasonal conditions. Hasui frequently returned to shrines and temple complexes across his career, adjusting the horizon line, time of day, or seasonal palette to yield compositionally distinct works from familiar subjects. This version may emphasize twilight or nocturnal conditions—the stone lanterns along the approach rendered as warm amber points against a deep blue bokashi sky, or the shrine hall illuminated against a darkened tree line. The torii and stone lantern groupings characteristic of Shinto sacred spaces anchor the composition architecturally, while surrounding water or forest provides atmospheric depth. Fine keyblock lines define structural details of the shrine architecture, while successive color blocks add the gradated sky passages and vegetative tones that distinguish shin-hanga from its Meiji-era antecedents.
