Description
This fourth variant of the Tsushima Shrine subject demonstrates the iterative approach Hasui brought to locations of sustained pictorial interest throughout his career. The print may differ from companion versions in its treatment of seasonal foliage, weather conditions, or compositional framing—perhaps depicting the shrine in autumn, when the surrounding forest turns to deep ochre and crimson, or in winter with snow-covered stone surfaces and bare tree branches visible against a pale sky. Shrine spaces in Hasui's work frequently function as stable architectural anchors against which transient natural phenomena—falling snow, autumn leaves, mist, late-afternoon light—are measured and observed. In the oban format typical of Watanabe-published shin-hanga, the keyblock defines structural lines of torii, stone lanterns, and covered pathways, while successive color blocks add gradated skies, textured stone and timber, and seasonal foliage across a run requiring careful registration.
