Description

From Hasui's 'Twelve Scenes of Tokyo' series, published by Doi Hangaten. Inokashira Park in Musashino, now Kichijoji, centers on a large pond that became a favored subject for shin-hanga landscape artists. 'Zansetsu' (lingering snow) describes the particular moment when snowfall has ended but snow remains partially on the ground, typically in late winter. Hasui likely composed the scene from the bank of Inokashira Pond, where bare zelkova and cherry trees cast reflections onto the dark water surface, their branches dusted with remnant white. The sky overhead would be rendered using gradated bokashi, shifting from cold gray-blue at the upper margin to a lighter tone near the horizon. Snow accumulates unevenly on stone lanterns or the gentle slopes at the water's edge, while scattered figures or small boats punctuate the stillness. The print reflects Hasui's characteristic approach to urban green spaces in winter — intimate in scale yet precise in atmospheric observation.
