From the 'Twenty Views of Tokyo' series. Ochanomizu is distinguished topographically by the Kanda River gorge, which cuts through high stone embankments before passing under the Hijiribashi and Mansei bridges. It was also the location of early railway infrastructure, making it one of the few areas in Tokyo where trains, river, and historic stonework coexisted visually. Hasui likely chose a vantage point along the upper embankment or from a bridge, looking down toward the river as it winds through the cut. The composition may include one of the iron bridges spanning the gorge, its reflections fragmenting in the dark river water below. The surrounding stone cliffs, a geological anomaly within flat Tokyo, create strong diagonal lines that draw the eye toward a vanishing point. Trees along the embankment top, bare in winter or leafed in summer, add organic texture to an otherwise architectural scene. This subject differs from Hasui's typical rural landscapes, foregrounding the built environment while using the river as the primary element of atmospheric mood.
