Description

From the 'Twenty Views of Tokyo' series, this print depicts Zojo-ji temple under snowfall or fresh snow accumulation, distinct from the non-snow views of the same temple elsewhere in the series. Snow transforms the Shiba temple grounds: the massive sangedatsumon gate, its curving roof weighted with white, rises against a leaden winter sky, while the stone-paved approach below reflects the pale light filtering through cloud. Hasui rendered snow scenes using a restrained palette of blue-gray shadows, cool white, and the warm ochre-brown of aged timber, applied in flat areas with carefully graduated edges to suggest the soft, rounded profiles of accumulated snow. The absence of human figures, or the inclusion of one or two small figures in winter clothing, reinforces the quietude characteristic of Hasui's snow compositions. The print likely uses a dark bokashi sky that fades toward the horizon, a technique emphasizing the luminosity of the snow surface below. Among the snow views in the 'Twenty Views of Tokyo' series, Zojo-ji provided an unusually monumental architectural subject for this atmospheric treatment.
