Description

From the 'Twenty Views of Tokyo' series. Tsukishima, a man-made island reclaimed from Tokyo Bay in the Meiji period, was known for its distinctive grid of narrow streets lined with two-story wooden machiya townhouses. Hasui's depiction under snow captures the neighborhood's particular character: snow lying along rooftops and timber eaves, and the narrow canal between the island and the main embankment reflecting the cold sky above. The composition likely positions the viewer at canal level, looking across the water toward a row of machiya facades, their narrow frontages repeated in a rhythmic horizontal band. Dark wooden latticework and shop curtains contrast with the white snow on roofs and sills. The water in the foreground is rendered in flat indigo-gray or a deep tonal wash, interrupted only by reflections of snow-laden rooflines. This print is one of several snow views of Tokyo waterfront districts in the series, each exploring how snow transforms the material textures and color relationships of everyday urban architecture into subjects of quiet pictorial clarity.
