Description

Hamarikyu Gardens in Chuo, Tokyo, was originally a shogunal duck-hunting ground constructed on reclaimed land at the mouth of the Sumida River. Its tidal ponds, fed directly by Tokyo Bay, and stands of black pine distinguish it from other urban gardens in the city. Hasui's twilight view likely places the viewer at the edge of one of the tidal ponds, looking west or northwest across water that reflects the fading sunset sky. The silhouettes of twisted black pines against the warm upper sky form an irregular, organic screen that frames the composition. Stone lanterns, low earthen bridges, or duck blinds may appear in the middle distance. The surrounding high-rise context of Tsukiji or the distant cityscape would have been excluded or minimized in the interest of compositional unity. Bokashi gradation across the sky, moving from deep orange-red at the horizon through violet to deep blue above, is balanced by the cooler reflective surface of the tidal pond below, creating the warm-cool contrast characteristic of Hasui's sunset and twilight compositions throughout his career.
