Edition period is the primary value driver for Hasui prints. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A through D types) consistently achieve 3–5× the price of posthumous reprints of the same design. Condition is the second key factor — unfaded colors, full margins, and absence of foxing or staining are essential. Subject matter (snow > rain > night > other) provides a further modifier within each edition tier.
Ushibori (Ushibori) in Ibaraki Prefecture on the shores of Lake Kasumigaura appears here in a second print showing the fishing village in a clear-weather condition distinct from the rain version. The settlement's low wooden buildings and boat landing gave Hasui a quiet, provincial waterside subject that exemplified the kind of overlooked Japan he consistently found picturesque. The lake's flat expanse and the village's modest scale produced a characteristically meditative composition.
