Description
Kamigamo, the district surrounding the ancient Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine in northern Kyoto, is characterized by the shallow Kamo River, low stone walls, and traditional townhouses set among bare winter trees. Hasui visited Kyoto repeatedly throughout his career, and this print records the district in the cold months — likely showing the stone-bridged waterway near the shrine precincts or the approach road under a canopy of leafless zelkova or cypress. The composition employs his characteristic winter palette: reserved white washi for snow-covered rooftops and ground, graduated grey-blue sky, and dark vertical tree forms providing spatial structure. The Kamigamo area retains a degree of rural character even within Kyoto, and the print may convey the particular quiet of this northern edge of the city in winter, distinct from Hasui's more urban Kyoto views of temple gates and bustling Gion streets. The shrine itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
