Description
This second impression of Winter Moon at Toyamagahara (戸山ヶ原) is among the earliest reprints of a composition that proved commercially durable across many subsequent runs. The subject — moonlit winter night over the open Toyamagahara grounds in Tokyo — uses a notably horizontal format, departing from the vertical compositions Hasui employed more frequently in his landscape work. The broad expanse of snow and sky required the printer to maintain a consistent bokashi gradation across a wide sheet without the tonal variation that architectural or tree forms might anchor. Where the primary impression establishes the design's tonal range, this second printing may show slight variations in sky gradient and the sharpness of tree silhouettes, differences arising from the hand-printed nature of shin-hanga production. Early impressions from this design are generally the most sought among collectors for their depth of color and the control of the night sky's tonal sweep.
