Description
Yakuō-in Temple in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, is the subject of this composition, one of several prints Hasui made in the Mito region during his extensive travels through the Kantō area. The temple grounds, likely featuring aged cryptomeria or pine trees, stone lanterns, and wooden hall architecture, gave Hasui a subject rich in textural contrast. Mito's temples and gardens carried cultural associations with the Mito Domain and its historical significance in the late Edo period, though Hasui's focus remained on the visual rather than the historical. The print may show the temple in any of the four seasons he routinely documented; autumn foliage or winter snow would heighten the contrast between dark roofline and surrounding color. The abbreviated title suggests this may be an early or informal print label for the design.
