Description
The Dainichido Shrine of Kobinata in northern Tokyo is captured in this 1916 woodblock print (Taisho period) as one of the city's smaller, neighborhood-scale religious sites. The "Dainichi" (Great Sun, or Vairocana) dedication situates the shrine within the syncretic religious landscape of early modern Japan, where Buddhist and Shinto elements were not yet fully separated. Kazuma's attention to smaller, less famous sites alongside the great landmarks demonstrates his interest in the city's complete religious fabric, not just its most celebrated monuments.
