$500–$4,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Koizumi's pre-war Tokyo views have historical significance. The 'One Hundred Views of New Tokyo' series is most collected.
This 1939 oban woodblock print by Kishio Koizumi depicts the Saruhashi Bridge in winter. Saruhashi, meaning "Monkey Bridge," is one of Japan's three most unusual bridges, spanning the Katsura River gorge in Yamanashi Prefecture. Originally built without any central support pillars, its arched wooden structure extends from both cliff faces to meet in the middle, a remarkable feat of engineering attributed to the seventh century. Koizumi renders the bridge under winter conditions, when snow accumulates on its curved surface and ice forms along the gorge walls. The contrast between the warm tones of the wooden bridge and the cold whites and grays of the winter landscape creates visual tension, while the deep gorge below establishes dramatic vertical space. Ink and color on paper capture the bridge's graceful arc against the stark geometry of frozen rock.
