The Battle of Niuzhuang in the snow — an engagement during the Manchurian winter campaign of early 1895 — is depicted in this February 1895 nishiki-e as Japanese infantry assault Qing positions through a blizzard. The Niuzhuang (Yingkou) area was the scene of some of the war's last major land fighting, and Kiyochika's winter battle compositions from this period share a compositional vocabulary of white ground, dark figures, and the diagonal drive of troops through adverse weather.
