Description
Soldiers in dark blue uniforms and caps move through a snow-covered forest of tall, bare tree trunks, some crouching with rifles raised while others stride forward with swords drawn. The scene is rendered almost entirely in cold grays and blues, with white snow falling in streaks across the composition and dusting the ground and branches. Kobayashi Kiyochika's 1895 triptych "Violent Battle in Snow near Niuzhuang" conveys a hushed, tense atmosphere despite its battle subject, the muted palette and obscuring snowfall softening the figures into silhouettes.
