Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The Great Bridge at Senju (Senju Ohashi), a Taisho-era woodblock, revisits the same subject as the 1913 color print but likely from a different vantage point or in a different season. The Senju crossing was a subject large enough to support multiple treatments, its long span and the busy waterway beneath it offering compositional possibilities that changed with the light, weather, and river traffic. This version, without the color of the earlier print, may emphasize the bridge's structural mass through monochrome contrasts, the ink capturing the weight of timber and stone against the flowing movement of the Arakawa River below.
