Senjogahara is the high marshland plateau in Nikko National Park north of Tokyo, a treeless basin of grasses, low shrubs, and meandering streams set between volcanic peaks. Maeda's print likely captures the openness of the plain, with the distant ridges of Mount Nantai or the Tarō range banded across the upper portion of the sheet. Subjects of this kind invited extended [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) work in the sky and middle distance, and the broad fields of color across the marsh grasses would have been printed with the [baren](/glossary/baren) in long, even strokes to keep the planes flat and atmospheric. Nikko was a recurring subject for hanga artists across both [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) and [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) camps because of its association with shrine architecture and dramatic mountain weather, but Senjogahara itself attracted artists drawn to emptier compositions. The choice fits Maeda's preference for landscapes where vegetation and weather, rather than monuments or figures, carry the picture.
