Description
CH33-Fuji no Uraba (藤裏葉, "Wisteria Leaves") is Chapter 33 of The Tale of Genji, in which the wisteria-viewing party at Genji's Rokujo-in estate marks a moment of social triumph and aesthetic pleasure in the novel's middle period. Maeda Masao's illustration for this chapter likely emphasizes the wisteria imagery — the cascading purple flowers that give the chapter its name — within the courtly garden setting, the decorative pattern of the wisteria creating compositional material perfectly suited to his ornamental graphic language. The Mount Fuji tag in the database suggests the composition may incorporate a distant view of the mountain.
