Description
Chapter 45 of The Tale of Genji — Hashihime (橋姫, "The Bridge Maiden") — opens the Uji chapters with the introduction of Prince Hachi and his two daughters at the remote Uji estate, the bridge maiden of the title being the tutelary spirit of Uji Bridge. Maeda Masao's illustration for this pivotal chapter that begins the novel's final movement captures the remote, melancholy atmosphere of the Uji setting — the river mist, the sound of the bridge, the isolated daughters waiting in their father's declining household — through the decorative compositional language he had developed for the full Genji series.
