Description
The Goeido — the main hall of Chion-in Temple, the massive Jodo-shu headquarters temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama district — is depicted here in Maeda Masao's architectural print manner, the great building's scale and mass conveyed through his bold graphic line. The Mieido or Goeido (御影堂) of Chion-in is one of the largest wooden structures in Japan, its cavernous interior housing a sacred image of the Jodo sect's founder Honen. Maeda's composition captures the monumental architecture with the direct engagement of a sosaku-hanga printmaker who carved his own blocks.
