Illustrations for Genji Monogatari (54) is the final chapter illustration of Maeda Masao's complete Genji series — Chapter 54, Yume no Ukihashi (夢の浮橋, "The Floating Bridge of Dreams"), the last chapter of the novel. This closing chapter is among the most mysterious in the Genji, ending not with resolution but with Kaoru alone with his thoughts and the novel itself seeming to dissolve into silence. Maeda's final illustration for the series captures this quality of incompletion and dream — the "floating bridge" between sleeping and waking, reality and fiction.
