$500–$4,000. Common landscapes: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Maeda Masao's atmospheric mountain and landscape prints have a dedicated following among sosaku-hanga collectors.
Kyoto Higashiyama (京・東山) — the long ridge of low mountains forming the eastern backdrop of the ancient capital, where the greatest concentration of Kyoto's historic temples, shrines, and traditional architecture is found — is depicted in one of Maeda Masao's Kyoto landscape subjects. The Higashiyama district, running from Fushimi Inari in the south to Nanzenji in the north, provided him an inexhaustible range of architectural and natural subjects, and his graphic sosaku-hanga style gave the historic buildings and wooded hillsides a boldness of visual presence that distinguished his treatment from the more atmospheric approaches of shin-hanga artists.
