Description

Red Gate of Imperial University — the Akamon, the famous vermilion gate of the former Maeda clan's Tokyo estate that became the main gate of what is now the University of Tokyo — is depicted in one of Maeda Masao's architectural subjects. The Akamon's brilliant red lacquer, its elaborate bracket and beam construction, and its historical association with both the feudal Maeda domain and Japan's premier modern university gave the gate a layered significance that Maeda's bold graphic treatment engaged directly. The vermilion color against the surrounding buildings would have been a striking compositional element.
