Description

A wide two-story wooden gate with a dark hip-and-gable roof and vermillion-trimmed lower walls stands at the center, flanked by low connecting structures with mottled brown-and-white walls. Small dark silhouetted figures walk along a pale tan pathway leading through the gate's open central doorway, and clipped green trees, a tall pine, and a distant pagoda-like roofline rise behind the compound under a hazy sky rendered in soft beige and grey tones. Vertical Japanese text and a red seal appear along the right margin; this is Maeda Masao's 1945 color woodblock print "The Red Gate of the Imperial University," from the series *Recollections of Tokyo*.
