Description
A Japanese house at sunset — its traditional architecture silhouetted against the warm colors of the evening sky, the shadows lengthening across the garden, the interior spaces beginning to glow with lamplight — is rendered in Maeda Masao's direct sosaku-hanga graphic style. The Japanese house at evening was a subject that combined architectural documentation with atmospheric observation, the familiar forms of wood, tile, and paper screen transformed by the transitional light of sunset into something poetic and transient. Maeda's bold line work gives the architectural forms their graphic clarity against the atmospheric sky.
