$300–$2,500. Temple scenes are among the most popular subjects for this artist. Good mountain/lake prints: $800–$1,500. Key value factors: Okumura's atmospheric landscape prints are modestly priced. Mountain and lake scenes are most sought after.
The five-story pagoda of Toji Temple, at 55 meters the tallest wooden tower in Japan, anchors the southern approach to Kyoto as it has since the ninth century. This woodblock print depicts the pagoda in winter, when snow settles on the tiered eaves and bare branches reveal the full height of the structure against a pale sky. Koichi isolates the tower as the central vertical element, its dark silhouette rising above the snow-covered temple compound. The pagoda's proportions, each successive story slightly smaller than the one below, create a rhythmic diminution that draws the eye upward. Toji's monthly flea market and its proximity to Kyoto Station make it among the city's most accessible temples, yet under winter snow the grounds take on a solitary quietness that the print conveys through empty foreground space.
