The Saga district of Kyoto—centered on Arashiyama and the temples of the bamboo grove—offered Saito a landscape that blended natural and architectural elements in proportions he found endlessly productive. Autumn in Saga meant the famous maple colors reflecting in the Oi River, the thatched roofs of Jojakko-ji turning gold among the trees. His undated rendering likely captures the visual compression of this scene: forest, architecture, and water collapsed into stacked planes of autumn color.
