Saito's Siamese Buddha likely originated from his travels across Southeast Asia, where he encountered sacred images distinct from the Japanese Buddhist canon—elongated crowns, sinuous hand gestures, gilded surfaces that absorbed and reflected temple lamplight differently than the painted wood of Nara's statues. He translates these qualities into the woodblock medium through bold contour lines and areas of saturated color, treating the foreign icon with the same searching geometric attention he brought to the Buddhas of Horyuji.
