The undated Deep Winter in Aizu—on woodblock print, ink and color on paper—belongs to the long sustained series of winter prints that constitute Saito's most celebrated body of work. The Aizu region's heavy snowfall, arriving early and staying late, transformed the landscape of thatched farmhouses and paddy fields into something that suited his mature abstraction perfectly: a world of white planes, black verticals, and the residual warmth of straw-colored roofs barely visible beneath their snow burden.
