Ikarugano Sato in Nara Prefecture—the ancient Ikaruga village where Prince Shotoku built Horyuji temple in 607 CE—carries in its landscape and architecture some of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in the world. Saito's (A) variant from Nara likely engages with the vernacular farmhouse architecture surrounding these ancient temple structures rather than the temples themselves, finding in the surrounding village a different kind of historical continuity.
