Kozanji Temple on Mount Toganoo northwest of Kyoto—associated with the priest Myoe and famous as the location of Japan's oldest tea plantations and the remarkable Choju-giga animal scrolls—gave Saito a mountain temple setting quite different from the Zen garden aesthetics of the lowland Kyoto temples. The (B) variant suggests at least two compositions, with this version perhaps focusing on a specific architectural element of the mountain temple complex.
