Description
Chusonji at Hiraizumi in Iwate Prefecture—the great Northern Fujiwara temple complex including the golden Konjikido, Japan's oldest surviving complete wooden structure still in its original location—was one of the most significant stops on Basho's journey and on Saito's subsequent retracing of it. The geometric compression he brought to this nationally important temple gave the famous golden hall an unexpected austerity, its glittering interior reduced to a mass of geometric form.
