Saga, the western Kyoto district surrounding the Arashiyama mountains and the Oi River—home to Tenryuji, Ninnaji, Daikakuji, and dozens of smaller temples and garden—was among Saito's most productive territories. The 1968 (D) variant, made in his early sixties when his style had reached maximum compression, likely shows one of the district's quieter precincts, the Saga landscape reduced to its essential structure: bamboo verticals, river horizontal, mountain bulk beyond.
