Shisendo—the Hall of the Poetry Immortals, a small hermitage built in 1641 by the samurai-scholar Ishikawa Jozan in the northeastern hills of Kyoto—was one of the city's most intimate gardens, its white sand raked into rivulets by the deer-scare bamboo fountain. The (G) variant suggests Saito made at least seven Shisendo compositions, each isolating a different element of the garden or its architecture across his decades of engagement with the site.
