Description
Snow and Sunset collapses two of Saito's most productive subjects into a single composition—the white ground of a snow-covered landscape meeting the warm color field of a winter sunset, the two halves of the image in dialogue across a horizon line. In the Aizu region, winter sunsets are often spectacular events, the low sun turning the snow surface from white to gold to rose before dark arrives quickly. His rendering would have treated this as a color relationship problem: warm above, cold below, the horizon a geometric event.
