Description
Snow, Boston from 1963 shows Saito finding in New England winter a visual experience that rhymed with his Aizu homeland—deep snow on rooftops, the compressed grey light of a northern winter sky, the bare branches of deciduous trees against a white ground. Boston under snow gave him architectural forms familiar from his Japan work but made exotic by their brick and clapboard surfaces, American winter through Japanese eyes finding the same geometric fundamentals.
