Description
The unidentified temple—the catchall title suggesting a building that resisted more precise identification in collection records—nevertheless received Saito's full formal attention. Temple as a subject type encompassed for him a vast range of architectural approaches: the simple thatch-roofed halls of mountain hermitages, the elaborate timber construction of major Zen complexes, the tile-capped gates of imperial-era foundations. Whatever specific building this depicts, it would show his characteristic reduction of sacred architecture to geometric essence.
