Winter in Aizu (11) from 1967—the eleventh in what may have been a numbered series of Aizu winter prints—shows Saito in his early sixties still generating fresh variations on his most personal subject. The numbered sequence suggests a systematic approach to exhausting the formal possibilities of the theme: each print asking what had not yet been seen in the winter farmhouse landscape, what angle or compositional arrangement remained to be found. By the eleventh, he was in deep territory.
