The 1938 Winter in Aizu (Aizu no fuyu) is among the earliest datable examples of the subject that would define Saito's international reputation—the deep-snow farmhouse landscape of Fukushima Prefecture rendered in the bold flat planes he was just beginning to develop. At this stage his approach was less compressed than his mature style but the essential formal vision is already present: the farmhouse reduced to its geometric mass, the snow treated as a flat white ground, the composition structured by the relationship of warm and cool tones.
