Winter in Gioji—the moss-garden temple in Sagano where the ruined courtesan Gio became a nun—gives Saito's most atmospheric Kyoto subject its most austere seasonal treatment. The famous moss garden, usually rendered in its summer green lushness, under winter conditions presents a different visual problem: dormant moss, bare maples, the thatched hall roof perhaps carrying a light snow, the garden's structure visible through the absence of its usual rich surface growth.
