Description
Saito visited Paris on several occasions, and his response to the city was characteristically idiosyncratic—ignoring the monuments to focus on wet streets, bookstall awnings, and the anonymous geometry of iron railings slick with rain. Winter in Paris carries the subdued palette of a northern European winter translated through a Japanese eye: dark tones, compressed space, the city reduced to its wet bones. The boldness of the sosaku-hanga line makes the Parisian street feel unexpectedly Japanese in its formal resolution.
